Joe and his wife Myra moved to Olympia from Eugene Oregon in 2005. The sense of community and the water brought them here. Joe and Myra are avid boaters, more specifically sailors. Joe has his Captain’s license and he and Myra are often on the water cruising or sailboat racing, which is a year round sport.
One of the first things Joe was attracted to about this area was the Port of Olympia. He has a long maritime background and wanted to get more involved so he applied, was selected and served on the Port’s Citizen Advisory Committee. During his six years, he worked with others on the committee in developing a new public outreach process and undertaking the fuel dock feasibility study for the Port.
Joe’s work experience and education are the perfect combination to be a vital contributor to the primary goal of the Port -economic vitality. He has a BA in Economics and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). He worked for 20 years in private industry and 10 years in government as a financial regulator – ensuring citizens are treated fairly and equitably by money lenders.
When Joe is not doing Port business, you can often find him and Myra on their 38 foot sailboat – Balder 2. They love getting out in nature, whether it be on the water, hiking with their dog Boji, or romantic weekend getaways. A secret – they are going to be Docents for a week at the Lighthouse on Stewart Island this summer.
